Writing things down

Floor Time

I've never been a carpet person: they get dusty, they disrupt the flow of a walk around the house, they're a tripping hazard, if a house is already filled with stuff the least you need is ANOTHER distraction on the floor. Or that's what I got from living at my parents' house, poster couple for maximalism, as someone who is easily bothered by all the stimuli.

When me and my wife moved into our new home last year, I was pretty set on not getting carpets. Turns out all my problems aren't as big as I thought when 1) the carpet gives an accent of colour and it's not a crutch against horror vacui 2) it's one carpet in a room that's big enough and not a patchwork of carpets 3) the carpet design is inoffensive. I realize number 3 is very subjective, but I think I made clear enough how subjective this problem is in the first place.

So I watch enough interior design videos to accept carpets in my house, in my studio even, throw in a nice inflating chair. I got this cozy spot right behind my desk, where I can go and chill when I need to recharge, take a break from work or just think hard about a song. I love it.

Fast forward to this year: I think it's time to get an additional small desk, one I can use just sitting on the floor, maybe on a cushion. I do everything at my work desk, including journaling, and it's not great both for keeping it tidy and for keeping work and leisure separated1. While looking for the perfect option, I don't wait for it and end up doing a lot of things on the floor.

Cricut? I keep it on a cart, but I need to use it on a bigger surface. On the floor when I need it.
Paper guillotine? Same, it's better on the floor.
Intense cutting and pasting? Journaling, sometimes? I mean, the floor isn't so bad...
Just chilling? The floor is spacious, I can stay on the carpet or just on the parquet depending on the mood, or maybe sit on the inflatable chair for a while. But it's actually pretty calming to just stay on the floor. So yeah, I didn't buy that small desk.

I feel like a toddler colouring on the floor, but it's nice to not stress too much about acting like an adult all the time.2

  1. I mean, I love my job so this is kind of hard in the first place, but I try.

  2. This post is tagged "tips" because I urge you to try floor time too. Worked for me!
